A common question on this Outdrive. I have one but it is in pieces and looks like most it is there though. Has anyone rebuilt one of these and how hard is it? I have rebuilt many engines and what nots but never done an Outdrive.

Would it be cheaper to out right buy one or rebuild it?

Opinions?

Re: Mercruiser Outdrive Alpha 1 Rebuild

What exactly do you mean by "rebuild"?

"Rebuild", as in all new parts. Or "rebuild", as in just put the existing stuff all back together?

Either way, if you don't have the specialized tools (or acess to them) to adjust backlash in both the lower and upper units it's not gonna be cheap. If the parts are in good shape I would think a reputable shop could rebuild it cheaper than a brand new one would cost. Then again, the peace of mind that comes with a brand new one has value as well.

I guess what I'm saying is that it's tough to give you the "right" answer based on the very limited information you've provided...

I guess a picture is worth more than words.

looks like the lower unit all together with the exception of a few bolts.

The upper part is in 2 pieces though.

I was going to go through all the parts and make sure the gears and other parts look in good condition and then replace if necessary. New gasket kit and all.

The previous own said it was from a working boat and was a replacement to the one he had.

Um...... do ya have a boat? And............ why is it in pieces ? Did the prev owner just need sumtn. to do while he pounded a 12 pk ? I would think ya gotta be really bored to tear apart a functional drive just for S and G...i would be tempted to try to sell it off on E Bay or something. Save your self a headache. BUT thats just me !
PS I do- somewhat -understand some one tearing it apart just for fun... If it aint broke, tear it apart a find out why, inquiring minds want to know maybe.

Found out someone was parting a boat because they just wanted the engine so by the time he got it was in pieces.

Re: Mercruiser Outdrive Alpha 1 Rebuild

imho, that looks like a parts drive to me.
a box full of nuts, bolts and pieces? the task of figuring where they all go looks daunting to me. since not many shops work on omc stuff, you'll have zero support from that. it'll be you and your trusty (likely) aftermarket service manual. + iboats, which will be a big help.

heck. it's already in pieces. maybe sell off the obsolete parts on ebay or the likes and make some bread on the deal.. + help someone else that's in bad need of a obsolete part...
