I am trying to determine a reasonable price for a 1961 Merc 400, 45 hp, manual start, long shaft engine. I cannot seem to find any information regarding price. The engine starts and runs well and has good compression in all cylinders. Comes with a spare prop, spare magneto points and manual. No controls or tank. Is anyone familiar with this engine and what a fair price might be?

Pricing outboards of older vintage can be tricky. A lot depends on whether or not you're willing to go through the hassle of shipping the engine. If you are, then you stand a better chance of finding someone who is actually looking for that engine and making a better sale. Are you in a hurry to sell? If not, put it out there at the high end of what you think it would be worth in your area and see what happens. If so, gather info on similar engines (hp, approx year, condition) from eBay and start in the middle.
