Drive slips out of gear

I have had several outboard motors but this is my first boat with a I/o...I've got a 2003 chaparral 183ss with a 4.3. Merc and an alpha one...the drive slips out of gear when slowing down...it never does it when putting the power down and only does it when slowing down fast...like when trying to slow down quickly for a wave I didn't see...if I try to put it back it gear to keep going, I get a big clunk when it engages...is this common or is something getting worn out? Thanks

Re: Drive slips out of gear

Any ideas? It only slips out of gear when I pull back quickly on the throttle? Thanks

Re: Drive slips out of gear

an alpha drive should never "slip" out of gear, in fact its darn near impossible due to the force on the clutch lugs, which is why there is a shift interrupt switch to aid in coming out of gear

are you sure you aren't just shifting the drive out of gear when you are throttling back rapidly??

if the shift lever is straight up/down, the drive is in neutral, 1 o'clock is rev, 11 o'clock is fwd

Re: Drive slips out of gear

I know what your saying but I'm definitely not taking the throttle back to 12 o'clock neutral...I'm thinking its coming out of gear because I can hear it slam back in gear when I push the throttle back up...strange
