5.7 Mercruiser will not plain out

I have taken my boat out several times this year and it ran fine. Yesterday I was going about 3/4 throtle and All of a suden the RPM's droped from 4K to 3K. I then let off and and checked the motor out to see if there was a problem. Everything looked good temperature, oil, etc. When I went to go back to the landing the boat would only run
2K RPM's when it was in gear and would not plan out. If i ran the boat in netural it would run full RPM's but when it is under load it will only run Two thousand RPM's The boat is running on all cylenders.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
