Just bought a Gimbal Ring off Ebay for my 90 chaparral V6, alpha one outdrive, got everything apart and noticed on the bottom my Gimbal ring has a bushing, the one I purchased has roller bearing with a grease fitting. Question is can I get this one to work or should I try and get another one..

thanks

Re: Gimbal Ring purchase

It'll be fine, just a little older than what you started with. They 1 design in earlier GEN II , then came up w/DESIGN 2.

Re: Gimbal Ring purchase

Mine is a Alpha One Gen I, the part numbers of the Gimbal Rings are:
Mine 94992-03 , purchased one is 94992-02.

If I install the lower pin of mine into the one with bearing there is a lot of slop, like
the pin needs to be bigger??

Re: Gimbal Ring purchase

This is from the manual:

IMPORTANT: Later style gimbal ring lower swivel
pin bushing can not be used on earlier style gimbal
ring which used a needle bearing and two
seals. Earlier style gimbal ring can be identified
by the presence of a grease fitting.

They don't specifically say anything about the pins, but there are two pins listed, a steel one and an a aluminum one. Mine (with bearings) was steel, if yours is aluminum it sounds like they are not interchangeable.

Re: Gimbal Ring purchase

Stonyloam,
Yes my lower swivel is aluminum, so Maybe I can change the lower pin to a steel one, it must be larger in diameter though, wondering
now if it will go through the outer transom plate hole??

Is this info from the Mercruiser Factory Service Manual Number 6?? If so which page??

thanks
