pulled lower unit to replace the impeller recently and it went without a hitch. ran it in the yard after rpair and all was well. parked it in the garage and that was it. heading out on a trip next week so i went out to charge the batteries and noticed gear oil on the ground. i know its gear oil from the smell. drained it to check for water but there was none. so i go back into my memory to go over everything i did and the only thing i can come up with is the shift linkage coming out of the lower unit. this is a force 1996 75 hp elpt. now the shift linkage is threaded into the lower unit. in order to line it up with the hole on the motor i had to back of the threads at least 1 turn. is it possible the linkage needs to be tightened all the way?....will gear oild leak from there if its not?. any help would be appreciated...thanks in advance

Re: someone please help

Clean the unit and see where the oil streaks are on it! Remove the prop and see if oil is coming out around the prop shaft seal. Double check the drain, fill, and vent screws to be certain that #1 they have gaskets and #2 they are tight.

If oil is leaking around the bottom of the prop shaft bearing carrier, that means the O ring is leaking--easy to fix.
The shift rod seal is above the oil level at rest with the engine upright so it probably is not the culprit. If the engine was tilted up though, then it could be leaking BUT it is not because you unscrewed the rod one turn.

Re: someone please help

it was tilted up. i dropped the lower unit and the only place i see any oil is on the front part of the gasket under the water pump plate by the shift rod. nowhere else. my manual says back the shift rod off 4 full turns so that answers that. theres a small drain hole for water in the front part of the lower unit and thats where the oil is coming from. not currently leaking. my guess is seals are bad at the shift rod. not a drop anywhere else... anyone concur?
