i am re-powering her with a 2005 merc 40 efi..it is replacing a 1978 55hp rude..should i expect a slower top end speed or about the same..right now she is running 28.5 at 5000 rpm wot

In 1978 outboards were rated at the powerhead, in the mid 80s they all went to rating at the prop.

Your Evinrude would rate somewhere in the high 40s at the prop, so you will notice very little difference.
