reverse will not engage

i have a 1998 225 yamma v max, never had this problem before but once i try put it in reverse, it will not engage. it just grinds like its trying to but want. does anyone have a fix for this.

have you messed with gear case or linkage recently?? If it happened all of a sudden it probably means you need new gear set..not cheap. you can also check your shift cable for a corroded/damaged place, check and see if you are getting full range of motion at end of shifter cable, also could be issue with controls.

i have tinkered with the linkage a little but that seems to not be working, i do not know much about outboard motors. yuo said gear box is not cheap. how much? you think it would better to take to a certified mechanic.

yes you should probably take it to someone who knows what they are doing. certified is not a big deal for something like this, but trust worthy is, I would ask around about best place to take your motor. I am not sure where you are, but there seems to be a lot of incompetent outboard mechanics around.
