Finally got my boat cranked! Feels great to accomplish after 3 weeks of frustration. However, it now backfires when i start it. It will stay on longer if I close the valve at the top of the carb. The boat has been sitting for 4 years. If I dont close the valve, the carb catches on fire after backfiring. Also, alot of smoke comes out before backfiring. What should I do?

Firing order correct?Spark wires on correct?Points corroded?Fuel level to high, check to see if raw fuel is dumping in carb at idle.Watch your face if it backfires.1-3-4-2 clockwise on dizzy cap is your firing order.

Re: Backfiring after starting HELP

You can find the proper procedure in your service manual on setting the timing....
