Steering Cables on a 85 Evinrude 90 HP

After 4 hours I did managed to free up the steering. I notices thre was excessive rust on the shaft. I assume in the long run it will have to be replaced. How do you remove this steering device

Unscrew the big nut on the tilt tube and pull the cable out. You might have to lift the engine off of the boat to get enough room to pull the cable completely out.

There us a part number heat-stamped into the outer sheathing of the cable. Usually a foot or so from the engine end. Give that part number to your local boat dealer and ask if it is still avalable. If not, you will have to buy a steering kit, which will have a cable and a new gearbox to match.
