1976 merc cruizer I/o tilt/trim will not shut off

I have just bought a 1976 merc cruizer, she had been sitting for a few years and tilt/trim was working fine, however on the third day running the trim motor stayed energized and will not stop unless disconnected from battery, I replaced solenoid and checked switch connection, no luck, can anyone give me a clue?

I would start by getting a scematic i.e. wiring diagram. Otherwise you can start by disconnecting wires from switch and see if motor still runs. If this is the case, then you may have a bonafied short circuit between your "hot" wire that feeds your switch and your switch leg going back to your trim motor. If your motor does not run when wires are disconnected then your switch is bad. Let me know more of what you find.
