Remove cable or linkage and see if it will shift by hand! post back results

Re: 1975 115 hp evenrude wont shift

Was it recently serviced? When I dropped the lower on my little 9.9 I guess I positioned the clamp on the shift cable wrong or something. It shifted a couple of times properly, and then when I got it out on the water it wouldn't shift into reverse, but I could go forward or neutral. I had to drop the lower unit to reposition the clamp on the shifter rod and it started working fine. I'm wondering if yours worked loose or if perhaps you have problems with the shifter itself.

Could either be in the control or the linkage. Does it feel like it's engaging at the control arm?
