40 hp evinrude won't rev in gear

I have a 40 evinrude and it runs good just idling or in neutral as soon as you try to go over about a 1/4 throttle in gear it just bogs and won't go. Also I'm not sure the year.
It's model # E40RE8R any help would be great.

Three things come to mind. Carb/s and or timing. How long since carb overhaul, and since last link and sync? Has it had a recent tune up? Post back and welcome to iboats.

It is running on one cylinder. Now you have to find out why. Could be one of the carburetors is dirty. Could be no spark on one cylinder. Could be low compression on one cylinder. Could be water ingestion in one cylinder. We can't troubleshoot it from here, you have to do it on site.
40RES is 1990. No such thing as 40RE8
