How do you check the coils to see if they are firing correctly?
Is there a tool you can by, or how do I do it with a meter?

You whip out your service manual and run the testing using an analog multi-tester.

Free advice for you...Start with the really simple stuff first and do not assume that anything actually is working. IE Look at everything two or three times before moving on to the next test. Duplication is not a waste of time when testing ignition componets the first time...Start with those pesky sparkplugs by putting in brand new ones:)

Re: Ignition problem 90 tohatzu

pulled the plugs last night and they all looked good.
got the motor started (only with the idle level up) and it ran very ruff sounding. not missing or poping but sounded very mufled.
after 2-3mins the temp on the head at all 3 cylinders was 130 or higher.
the water pump was changed about a year ago and was pumping really good. the water coming out of the prop was about120-130degrees, and the water coming out of the tatle tail was about 80-90. when i put the idle level down, motor stops!

PS: i noticed that on the bottom bolt hole of the lower coil, the houseing on the coil has cracks?? not sure if that is important or not??

Cracked is always a good indicator of an iffy part.

Re: Ignition problem 90 tohatzu

just for giggles I took the front breather off the carbs and drained all 3 bowls. while i had the linkage i started the motor ( it will only run with the idle lever up)
when I pulled the trottle on each carb. the top carb sounded good, the middle one had alot of popping and smoke out the exhaust. and the bottom was a little popping and some smoke.
all in all the motor runs muffled and won't idle. I cannot get it into gear because when you lower the idle the engine dies!

Re: Ignition problem 90 tohatzu

The most common service item on these motors (aside from carb cleaning) is to verify the link-and-sync (timing synchronization). Many shade-tree mechanics will goof it up. The procedure is in the service manual. (BTW, your manual is presently at the Kenner, LA, FedEx sort facility. Tracking number 443278247217, scheduled to be delivered by July 5th). If this motor is new to you, and has never run up to your expectations, I wouldn't take anything for granted. check compression... soak/clean all 3 carbs... verify timing... verify idle stop screws are set correctly, etc.

Re: Ignition problem 90 tohatzu

I just remembered that before this happens I put sta-bil fuel additive in my tanks, but it was the red one not the marine kind! Would that cause a fuel problem in the motor or carbs??

The additive does not do anything to prevent the carbs from gumming up.
