Hi, first of all this is a great forum and i did a lot of reading and looking at all of the rebuild threads. lots of nice boats here. i have a 1965 Starcraft Jupiter. im not going to do a full restore on it, just enough to get by for now. i already replaced the floor and put new carpet in the boat. the old 2 piece window was cracked on both sides so i got a universal from a boat salvage and put it on. next is paint, i need to know what kind of paint i should use and primer if so? im going to do a white bottom, red middle and white top. is there any easy way to get the boat off of the trailer where i can get under it? i was thinking of maybe building some stands for it. Any advice/ help would greatly appreciated.

Re: 1965 Starcraft questions.

When I remove boats from trailers I simply lower the tounge as far as it can go. Block up the stern, ive used cinder blocks. Raise the trailer and watch the stern set on the blocks and begin to rise off the trailer. I then use a bottle jack, sometimes with wood to protect hull and jack up the bow. At this point the boat will be off the trailer, the fun part is slowly pulling out the trailer while moving the jack around the axles, or trailer rails. Once you start you will find it quite easy, this boat should come off no problem. You can build stands, but that may not be necessary with your boat.

There are many kinds .... it seems that Rustoleum is more of a fan favorite due to the cost and ease of use. I myself just used ACE rust-stop... because I could get it tinted.... at least in my local. If you take it to bare aluminum ... Im fairly sure you will need an etching primer for better adhesion to bare alum. Then you can coat over it. There are many restoration threads in the Starcraft forums. One of the top sticky threads is all about resto's. Pick one and go for it. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=385090
Good luck

I'd recommend hitting any bare aluminum with etching primer, prime with Rustoleum clean metal primer, top coat with Rustoleum with Valspar hardener added.

Re: 1965 Starcraft questions.

Strip the hardware off,
mask off the upper rubrail,
sand with 220,
prime bare spots with etching primer,
roll on 2 coats of Rustoleum with a med nap roller, wait a day between coats and use a new roller each coat, use a 9" roller for the top and a 3' roller for the Laps and bottom.
jack up the boat and paint the missed spots on the bottom with a brush.
