Hey guys this is my first outboard to ever own, so i dont know a whole lot about them. I bought this old motor and replaced the water impellar and the gear lube. I took it out to the lake and it ran fine at low speeds, but when i idled up it seems like its slipping or something. The rpm's would shoot up and down.i adjusted the trim on it , but it didnt seem to have any effect on it. Any idea's on where i need to start?

How does it sound when you give it gas in neutral. Does this problem start only at wide open throttle?

It dosent have a neutral, set up kinda like a lawnmower. It has a slow idle and then all the way up to high. When its set on high it will rev up real loud and then as the boat gets going it starts to bog down and then the rpms will shoot back up like the motor is fixing to blow. It has the same effect as if a transmission on a car was fixing to go out. If that makes sense.

Try adjusting the high speed needle on the carb. Look at this link. It is number 23 in the picture. Start off by spinning all the way in till it is snug then adjust it out 1 1/2 turns to start. While at wide open throttle adjust in and out to see if anything changes.

You might want to check out the prop hub for slippage. Just a thought! Good luck.
