mercury lower unit issues

I have a 1993 merc 2.5l 200hp after ruling out prop issues and cable adjustment there are two issues one after running for about an hour in drive it starts coming out of gear and will only stay engaged under 2000rpms and two when going in and out of reverse a couple of times it begins to rev up and grind. Also notice in drive if you turn the prop by hand it locks in one direction and rachets in the other but in reverse it locks in both directions is this normal. I guessing lower unit replacement.

its normal for the prop to lock in one direction and ratchet in the other for FWD, and lock in both directions in REV. Have you checked the lube in the LU? see if its milky or has water in it. Also, see if any metal shavings come out with the oil.
