1995 Johnson 9.9 hp four-stroke..shifting problems...please help.

Hello,
I have the motor on my 24 ft pontoon. the other night when i was out, i went to shift into reverse and boat went forward. When I put it in neutral it still stayed in forward. Do you think there is something wrong with the shift cables or something in the lower unit.

please any advice is help to me...thanks

Have you even checked to see if your cable is working or not? Have you had someone shift it and you watch to see what happens? If someone shifts it and you don't see it move anything back there then it is the cable. If something tries to move and doesn't then let us know and we will go from there.

ok, when I shift, it does move back at the motor. and another thing that blows my mind is that when the motor starts, it automatically is in forward eventhough I have the control throttle in neutral.

Disconnect the cable and shift the engine manually. Does it go in Forward, reverse, and nuetral that way? If not your linkage has come undone. I believe on your engine there is an inspection plate partway down the midsection. There will be two screws holding it on. You will see that there are two brass screws inside that hole your shift rods together.

good call Monte. I also just realized that it is a four stroke and I haven't worked on any of them. It should be a J. That was a lot of time unless you just cut/paste.

Sounds to me like some linkage has either broke or fallen off on the mtr.

Forward still works.. Can I keep running it until I can get it fix or will it make it worse?

If it's just the cables then you can always just manually shift into gears (once cables are disconnected) and not hurt anything. But if it's not the cable then I personally would not run it until it's all fixed up. But then again I'm just a newbie at this stuff. GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Me too, it doesn't take much for it to slip and cause a similar problem.
