I recently purchased an '58 35 hp Lark, and I had it out on the water and it worked great the first time. The second time, not so much. I had to jumpstart the boat, and it started fine after that. There was a bad battery and it was replaced. After replacing it, I went to start it, and the starter will only engage sometimes, and there is smoke coming from the battery terminals. I'm not sure where to go from here. Any thoughts?

Battery cables. Take them off, scrub both ends shiny and reconnect. Let us know what happens.

Well, I polished up the terminals, and it turns over like once or twice, but then it stops and I hear a whine like there isn't enough juice to keep going or something is seized. The battery terminals are still hot after trying to start.
