Other than the 5 bolts/nuts above the lower unit on a 1986 Evinrude 20 hp, how do I drop it? No shift shaft access under powerhead and no access door on side of midsection.

You have to remove the water intake screens on the sides and disconnect the shift linkage.

With all the bolts backed off, pull the lower unit down. This will expose the shift coupling through the gap on the stbd side of the motor. Remove the lower of the two bolts through the coupling. You may need to move the shift lever to get a good access. Go to boats.net to look at the drawings if you need to. When replacing put a screw driver in the gap in the coupling and pry it open just a little. This will assist with relocating the shaft in the coupling.

I admit I did not go to the drawings. I went from memory.
If he made a mistake on the year he now has both types.

The extra information is always good, like you said, either type he has it covered.
