Have a 1993 40 h/p evinrude that comes out of the hole fine and runs fine for 5 minutes or so then starts cutting back. Pump ball back up and all is well for another 5 minutes or so then all over again. Starts and idles with no problems. Any suggestions appreciated.

Re: fuel problems

Fuel pump needs to be rebuilt or replaced.

What hidef said, and while you're at it, check the line/bulb/etc. and replace as needed and then install a fuel/water separator if you don't have one.

Re: fuel problems

first make sure pump is bad.take off 2 lower bolts on fuel pump.stick nut n bolt into both again, tighten.pump bulb,if fuel leaks it is bad.or get a clear fuel line run from pump to carb and see if its not coming out or air in the line.while running also take line off pump and see how it is coming out.

Re: fuel problems

Electric start ???
If so put a temp hose from the motor side of the pump to a container and crank the motor.
Continuous strong spurts of fuel = pump OK
Strong spurts diminishing to trickles = failing fuel pump.
Dribbles or nothing = failed fuel pump.

Make certain that you crank it on the muffs or in water so you do not damage the impeller.
