will not go into gear

Hi I have a 1989 raven with a alpha 3.0 inboard outboard..I had prop damage and bought an used prop the prop was in great shape but the pitch was 15 degree and the one that came on the boat was an 18 degree pitch..The guy at the shop said it may cause my Rpm,s run higher and it did so I ran the boat slower..And after a day of pulling a tube went back out tghe next day it ran fine at first but when we got ready to trailer the boat it ran hot and would not go back into gear.. Could the 15 degree prop have done damage to my lower unit?? He someone please help?? Thankyou..

Define "prop damage"
prop damage, replace prop, run it for a day, overheat, no engaugement.
running hot could be a broken shaft or engine coupler or very low drive oil.

The old prop had a few chips out of it from running over a rock..And I bought a used one that had a 15 degree pitch. and the mortor came with a 18 degree pitch. prop.. Now when I put it into gear it want engauge the mortor bogs and shuts down but when I check the prop out of the water in gear it fills like its in gear but I can turn it with my hand. When before in gear I would tunr the prop counter colck wise and it would lock..Just not sure what happend

Ayuh,... My guess is the vertical shaft sheared at the o-ring groove...

Pull the lower unit to see...

I just hit a rock with my brand new yamaha 90hp. I didn't hit it all that hard, and dinged up the prop only a little bit. It did kill the engine though. Now it won't start or shift out of gear.
When I try to start it, it sounds like it is trying to start in gear.
I cannot manually turn thr propeller.
Anybody had something like this happen before?

Almost everyone who hit hard bottom ,rocks, pilings,maryland crab traps, or anything else harder than water suffer damage to props, gears, shafts, housings, couplers, engine crankshafts.

"NO PERSONAL QUESTIONS, THIS IS WHAT THE FORUM IS FOR."
Insults, however, are apparently OK -- if they are sufficiently vague and issued by the "Vice Admiral."
While the Admiral's post states an obvious truth,it offers nothing whatever constructive - that's why its insulting.
I ask the Master Shipwright if this Forum is the right place to dialog when, for the first time, you "hit hard bottom ,rocks, pilings,maryland crab traps, or anything else harder than water suffer damage to props, gears, shafts, housings, couplers, engine crankshafts" and you're trying to figure out what you did to your motor and how to fix it?

OK jpwillie, I'll try to tell you another way. Since your gear shift won't go to neutral you do have an issue to resolve. I'd say you should go to the forum for your motor and post you own thread there. I can't help you since I'm a Mercruiser guy, never had a Yamaha.

You are hijacking another poster's thread at this point so you probably should not answer me, just restate your problem in the correct forum.

BTW The vice admiral isn't as harsh as some of the other guys in here, I think he was sufficiently kind to you. Don't read too much into it, we do really help each other in here. If you get in a conversation about feelings it's at the expense of your real concern, the prop strike.
I hope you can just unload a gear to get it out of forward.
Hey, if your motor has the flywheel on top like the outboards we had in the old days maybe you could turn the motor backward a few degrees to see if that will get it out of gear. Disconnect the battery and remove the key when you do that though, safety 1st.
There are still issues though if she's locked up, sorry for your damage, and good luck getting it fixed.

You only asked if this has happened before. It does,constantly. May even be covered under warranty.
Yours can be anywhere from the powerhead down to the gear case.Only a thorough teardown and inspection will reveal the damage. crankshaft, driveshaft, pinion gear or gears in the lower unit.

WOW.... Where did that come from?

Certainly didn't see it as an "insult" or a dig in any way. He just made a comment the if someone hits an object with the prop, chances are there could be damage caused to anything connected to the prop, from the power head on down, depending on how hard the object was struck....
