I have a 2002 Johnson Ocean Pro 175 hp outboard. Is it a 2 stroke or 4 stroke? I dont know. It has an oil reservoir in the battery box with approx 1" of oil in it right now. Is this enough? Not sure what kind of oil i need to put in it. I assume it is a V6 b/c it has 6 spark plugs. I feel kinda like tim the toolman everytime i start fooling with it so any help or advice is appreciated.

If you have a oil tank it is a 2 stroke. You should add some oil to the tank, I wouldn't run the tank that low myself. Check with your dealer about 2-cycle oil. 6 plugs = 6 cylinders.

thx cap'n Daviet. any particular brand you recommend? How full do i fill the tank...about 1/2 way?

I don't run oil injection, don't trust them. Some say that synthetic oil smokes less, others say it don't matter. You can by 2-cycle oil at a lot of different places, make sure it is TC-W3 oil. Keeping the tank 1/2 full will be fine.

Fill it half full if you want...but why would you not fill it all the way? fill it with a good brand 2 cycle marine oil

I guess it depends if he wants to by it by the quart or gallon.

your smarter than some you atleast asked instead of asking how bad the motor could be after finding out what that container was the hard way so id say it was a good question
