I am new to this website and i saw some things about old outboards so i figure that this place to get some ideas. so here is my promblem

My grandfather gave me an old 5hp Johnson i think that it is a modal tn28. I am having problems getting started. My dad had it running last year i just pulled it out and got it started for a couple of mins then I couldn't keep it running. I had to replace one of the fuel lines and I am just out of idea's. I am not sure how far the primer should be turn in also. Any ideas would be great thank you

first of all, lets make sure the basics are covered. Are you getting a good hot spark? Is motor getting sufficient fuel? Is feul fresh? is the ratio right? has carb been overhauled in the last year? if not, get carb kit OEM and get busy! Post back and let us know. Good luck.

Yeah the carb has been redone. I just took off one of the fuel lines leading to the tank and no fuel was coming out of it. So i took the valve out and the fuel just dribbled out. I finally took the fitting out of it and found so much dirt I was amazed to have any amount of fuel coming out of it. I will finish it in the morning and hopefully going for a test ride before lunch. but we will see. Thank you for the ideas though. I might have more questions soon.
