long story short pulled my lower unit oil drain plug and got white milky oil so i knew my seal were shot so i took it to the shop to have seals replaced. Shop called today and told me that my lower unit was a time bomb. Forward and reverse gear were missing teeth. My question is how hard is it to rebuild this technical wise, looking at the manual doesn't look that hard but would like other opinion. I cant afford $1500.00 for them to rebuild or replace the lower unit. If i do rebuild myself where is a good place to buy the parts for this project?? I have read that there are some better grade parts than others. I know that the seals will need replacing and the forward and reverse gear will need replacing also. What else would anyone recommend replacing? Any help with this would be great and much appreciated. Thanks.

Right here at iboats. BTW. thats why were here. As far as the job goes, depends on your ability and if your comfortable doing this? Not a hard job as long as you can follow some kindergarten instructions. I would suggest you also get a manual for you exact model. And if you stumped or are unsure, pop in and post the question. Pictures help a lot also. good luck on your new adventure. Post back and let us know how you make out!

okay, i had read on other forums that there were some inferior parts out there there but no names were given. I am fairly mechanically inclined but never worked on a outboard engine to this extent. I have the johnson repair manual and it looked pretty easy but sometimes they make it look easier than it is. Is there anything else you might replace or look to check while i am this far into it??

Sure there is. Replace the impeller while you have the lower unit off. Cheap insurance witch by the way should be changed every season anyhow. Replace any and all lower gear case seals and O-rings. Good luck and post back soon.
