I have a 1975 115HP Evinrude with a slugish starter motor. Battery is fully charged at 13.4 volts, vlotage is 12.8 when the starter solenoid is energised. I pulled the starter motor the brushes are ok with a few marks but the commutator has two areas of heavy pitting - looks like from the +ve brushes, so it looks like a replacement.
Ebay has caltric items but some posts say that these are inferior chinese imports. Since I live in Australia I cannot afford to return a nitme to the US if it is defective. Are the starters for 115V4 the same from 1973 - 1985?
What is a good after market brand?
Thanks

Have you serviced the battery cables? Disconnect each end and scrub shiny, then reconnect. The most common cause of your symptoms is hidden corrosion in connections. Worst offender is where the battery ground cable bolts to the engine block.

Good luck. :)

Thanks, I will re-assemble the starter and clean/scrub the battery leads - I did get them second hand.
