Re: fuel gauge not working

You THINK you have to replace the sending unit???? It would be a good idea to VERIFY that you need to replace it and that process is covered in detail in several posts in just the last week two. Use the SEARCH feature using FUEL GAUGE as keywords. How to access the sending unit varies greatly but unless you have side mount fuel tanks, you will not find a fuel tank sender in the side panels. Sending units are mounted in the top of the tank. How you get to it can be an issue which is why you need to make sure the sender is bad before you cut a hole to access it.

Re: fuel gauge not working

hello
thanks for your quick response. i think the problem is the sending unit because the gauge seems to move freely although it rarely goes over the half way mark. it may stay at the half way mark for a while then it seems to start working correctly below that point, but the whole time it move left to right rapidly. the reason i was hopeing it was the sending unit is because its normally quick access to the unit .the 98 cobalt 232 bowrider does not have a top access panel. if it is any help in trouble shooting i found two multiple wire plugs that were corroded they were related to tach. and power to the coil, i cleaned them up and havent had a problem with them since. maybee the wiring from the sending unit to the gauge may also have a corrosion issue.
thanks again
jim
