james O. cool that ya got a new boat. it sure is exciting isn't it. i am just another end user of a boat, like you. so i got no wisdom in perticular, espescialy about your boat. i just got my boat mid last summer. and there are many things to check. i started with the trailor. i needed new tires and wheel brg. before i could even transport it. i started with a slow major clean up. ya can find all kinds of defects if you go over it slow, paying attention to what your cleaning. includeing the engine compartment. ya can also go run it and find out what's up. i found a fuel pump filter in mine that looked like a fuzzy blanket, didn't even look like a filter anymore it was so degaded. found that when the boat woundn't go so fast. like idle. check and make sure every thing works while your out boating around. my fuel gages didn't work. an unconnected ground wire. i'd think that pullin the drive would be a good idea. checking the bellows, gimble brg. lubing the u-joint would be a good idea. if ya have access to the boat repair records you can read over the recipts and see what has been done to maintain it. i have found in my recipts that i have a manifold that has been epoxyed once and re-epoxyed twice. no sign that it's ever been replaced. it shows no sign of a problem. but it's gettin replaced this spring, asap. that i would not know other than going through the recipts. so these are just a few of the things that i found for my boat. i am still looking for more problems myself. if it aint one thing, it will be another.......it's a boat. oh and one other thing, get a service manual for it. that will give ya a laundy list of things to check out, and when to check them. have fun with the 8 yr old. he's gonna love that new boat.

Ha Ha, I know my wife wasnt expecting this boat tobe so big, my other boats i had wertev 14ft. and 16 ft. She definately needs a clean up and suchbut a very nice boat for the yr. I have ordered a manual the night i purchased the boat My wife is already starting on me about being obsessed already and its only been 1 day. I am so geeked about being finally in something that i aint afraid of going farther out in . Especially where i fish in Lake Erie. Thanks everyone for the replies.

James, welcome to Iboats, and congrats on your new boat. As ziggy said, go through the boat, and look at everything. If you have a question about something...post it on here, chances are one of us has been there. Change the oil and filter, checkout the wiring, clean up any corrosion on connectors. Run the engine in the driveway on "muffs" for twenty or thirty minutes, while watching the oil pressure and temperature, make sure there are no problems there. After the engine cools pull the spark plugs and look at them, compare them to the illustrations in your service manual. Explain to your wife, that just about everything on a boat is just as serious as the tires and brakes on your family car. Lastly, have a great summer on your new boat.
