I was test running my mercury 402 in a tub after a 15 year layup, I didn't have the control cables attatched, while the engine was running at a very fast tickover the gear control arm slipped into reverse, it did make a nasty crack when it engaged and promptly stalled the engine, I now find that the selector travels almost to its limit before engaging reverse, and then does slip, it's as though its not engaging properly, does anyone have an idea of what's happened here, and can it be fixed, this was a great engine till I did this !!!!
