I've got a 19ft carolina skiff that has been painted. When the paint was sprayed it was applied directly over the existing gel coat. Is there a method or solvents I can use to remove the paint without damaging the gel coat?

Also, I can see a few areas where the paint was taken off and the gel coat is gone as well in those areas, can you apply gel coating to JUST areas where it has been scratched off?

if you want to loose the paint.......try a chemical stripper......it wont hurt the gell.
if not, sand it !

as far as gelling over an Area......yes.
one thing...before you gell, make shure that the fiberglass is in good condition. most of the time that the gell has rubbed off the glass is usually scarred as well.

so they make chemical stripper that you can just wipe/spray on, and wipe off and it'll remove the paint? any brands in particular you would recommend?

Try acetone wipe..

If that doesnt cut it..then I would use sand paper to remove the paint.

sand and polish..then gelcoat repair as needed on burn throughs ( unless you plan on painting it again ) .
