I?m about to start working on my fathers '86 Freedom 160 which has a very soft deck so I?m planning to replace the stringers and the deck. From what I?ve read it's also very possible that the transom may be rotted out. Is it possible to replace the plywood section in the transom without removing the cap? It?s an outboard if that makes a difference. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

It is theoretically possible if you have great access to it from the inside. From what I've seen though, the slight pain of removing the cap is far outweighed by how much easier it makes the rest of the project. Shouldn't be bad at all to decap a 16'.

Welcome to iBoats!

It all depends on how the splashwell configuration is on your boat. But EZ is correct, 99.9% of the time it is NOT the the recommended way to do it. Decapitation IS the way to go!!
