I have a 25 hp 1971 evinrude that runs great but pops out of gear. It used to not do this but one day i was coming down the river wide open and all of a sudden it was like hitting a clutch or something . The motor revved up rpms but prop was spinning like it is supposed to. Everyone told me it was the clutch dog and cradle. I took foot apart and replaced both of these parts and inspected forward and reverse gear . Everything looked fine so i put parts in and tried it out but it did not fix the problem. So i inspected bottom and top of the crank shaft that runs down foot and it also looked fine. As long as u barely give it gas it will push boat fine, but when u get it under a load it acts like u clutch it and i reduce throttle back down and it starts to push boat again. Any suggestions because the problem started occuring all at once. Motor runs great and i would really like to get it fixed!

Sounds like you have a "spun" prop where the rubber hub is letting go. Make a mark on the prop with a line on the prop and then run it in the water when it acts up then check ro see if the lines still match; if they don't then the hub is spun and you will have to have it rehubbed or buy a new prop. Good luck

If you find that you have to tear into your lower unit again, check your upper shift rod linkage and make sure everything is tight. You don't want any sloppiness in the shift linkage whatsoever. Also, make sure the shift linkage is adjusted properly too.

It has shear pins in foot and everything is good there. How do u adjust shift linkage. There seems to be no adjustment in it.
