Engine backfire at half throttle

Hello,

Having an issue with my 5.7 mercruiser. Issue only happens at temperature, boat will run fine up to 3k RPMs then the tachometer will jump up to 6k and the engine will backfire, pop, and sputter. If you advance the throttle tachometer will eventually come back to normal reading and the boat will accelerate and run fantastic.

So far I have replaced plugs, throttle sensor, distributor and cap, coil, ignition module. I have disconnected the tachometer completely and still having problem. I have checked the plug wires and they appear to be fine. I am at a loss as far as what to pay for next and the dealership doesn't have any clues but will be happy to replace several more parts for a nominal fee =). Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Re: Engine backfire at half throttle

Sounds like an electrical issue to me. Check all the ground wires for corrosion. also check and make sure the wires for the distributor are correct.
