Hire a surveyor if you 'REALLY' don't want to get ripped off. Surveying a boat is a complex process and not the same as 'walking around/test driving' a car. There are too many points to really list out and skills required to properly ascertain the state and condition of a boat. A good surveyor doesn't simply look at the hull, they spend hours tapping every inch of the hull with a rubber mallet and listening. Taking moisture readings of fiberglass. They go through a luandry list of NMMA and ABYC codes and check for things we wouldn't even think about checking.

A Survey is not cheap, so I would make sure the boat, and the price are right before sending a surveyor in. Essentially, have it surveyed once you've decided you'd like to own the boat (but BEFORE you buy it).

At least take it to a local shop for a check out. You need something beyond a hull survey. A boat shop can also check the power plant and drive as well as electrical.

A few hundred bucks is nothing after a 9 hr drive.

All that'll tell you is that the engine starts and doesn't overheat at idle speeds in neutral. Honestly, that's a fairly useless 'test'.

Survey and/or boat mechanic, plus sea trial for a noob buying a $10K boat.

Can anyone recommend a mechanic to look at/survey a boat in Orlando, Florida? I'm looking to buy a used Malibu and want to make sure I don't get a lemon.
