I have a 1991 Evinrude 50, starts well and idles well, when I engage the throttle the engine revs up then quits, all the time the primer ball goes soft. Is this a high speed jet, carberator issue?

Many thanks.

With the engine running the primer bulb will not be hard, it will soften up as apposed to being firm when pumping up before starting. You should start with some basic checks, compression, spark and fuel delivery. Is the fuel fresh, any visable fuel leaks in the lines?

Thanks, my main concern is the throttle up and subsequent quitting. Any thoughts?

Well, first off that engine will run on one cylinder, when you try to accerlate on one cyliner it will stall. You need to eliminate things that are good to find out what is wrong. The spark and compression are the easiest things to check, if all is well there you will have to move on to the fuel system.
