Hi, I recently bought a 1978 evinrude 115899c 115hp outboard. The tilt/trim has been giving me some problems, here is a description of what happens.

-Trim up works smooth and fine.
-Trim down works BUT when i have the switch pressed the motor spins but does not lower the engine until i let off the switch.
-Tilt up does not work (stops when tilt is at max and requires manual lifting to tilt engine all the way up (drops a little bit once switch is released)
-Tilt down works fine until I get to the top of the trim (then it operates as described above)

Things done so far:
-cleaned electrical connections inside tilt/trim control box
-tried bleeding ATF (up and down a dozen times but there always still seems to be a bit of air left in the reservoir when i unscrew the filler to top up)

All of this I have been testing on the trailer. Is is possible that the motor is not getting enough juice to tilt up? Or more likely that I'm failing to bleed all the air OR have some other hydraulic problem? Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

is it leaking somewhere? check for leaks and post back... the most common place it leaking around the trim cylinder shafts

I have not noticed any leaks anywhere, if there are any, they are leaking super super slow....

how about your tilt tube is it nice and lubed up? more than once have i had a stiff tube cause it to be all herky jerky...

kick it into manual override and lift the motor up and down by hand if it goes up and doesnt want to fall down by itself the tilt tube is partially frozen up

I just greased the tilt tube up yesterday...I will try what you just suggested right now. One question though, with that manual override screw do I just turn it partially or take it basically all the way out before i lift the motor?

dont take it all the way out a half of a turn should be good enough but give it a full turn or two just to be sure you severely damage it if you try to take it out - theres a captive pin in there that prevents removal

itll stop if youve gone too far... dont go past that

Done, It falls on its own super smooth. One thing thats probably not good...I tried it again but tightened the manual override up when it was locked at top and it still fell all the way down with ease.

alright im bowing out now your out of my realm of expertise there bro sorry ill look in my 1981 v4 manual and see what i can see thoug but i thik your gonna need to get an OMC service manual and give the trim and tilt section a thurough once over ... has this got a two wire or three wire trim motor?
