I have a 25 4-stroke (2005) that starts fine with 1 or 2 pulls of the cords but tends to idle and run very rough. When the motor is running, in neutral, it will idle smooth and then the rpm will go down and run rough and then pop back up to what i call normal idle. When I put the motor into gear, it will almost stall and then the rpm picks up and accelerates quick and then it seems to die down and then pick back up. When I get the boat on plane, the motor will jerk and bog down and then it will pick up and run opened up and then bog down and then pick up.
I have checked the fuel system front and back, I have rebuilt the carb, as well as have had it re-built by 2 separate techs and the problem still lingers. I like the motor because it is quiet and it pushes my crabbing boat really well. I keep it in the garage and it has fresh fuel as well as fresh service to the motor. I am 1 step away from selling this motor and going back to a 2-stroke.
Can anyone offer some insight as to what may be causing this problem? It seems like the mixture is off balance; like there is too much fuel and not enough air or vice versa. I don't know if it is staving for fuel or getting too much. I know it is using fuel because i am going through 6 gallons of gas after 3 all day trips of crabbing; which consists of running about 5 miles up river, idling through 2,000 feet of line several times and then running back. Please help me keep this motor on the boat or help me make the decision to repower. If need be, i can post a video of the motor's behavior.
