1977 115hp evinrude wiring problems

i have a 1977 115hp evinrude that the batt wire gets hot im not sure if i have key hooked up wrong there is supposed to be a fuse there but it was taken out before me any idea why it is getting that hot would be a help

By battery wire do you mean the battery cable or the wire the feeds the ign switch.

thank you ill try and chase the wires down to see if they are run right but with a quick glance it looks about like what i have
