1978 85 hp johnson water pump

Ok I'm looking to unhook the shift rod. All I see is a screw tucked under the carbs and very hard to get to.Is the rod that long I'd say about 18 or so inches or is there something else. The book say I have to remove a pin there is no pin. Thanks for all our help

and yes this is a difficult job no matter how you slice it put a piece of masking tape over the top of a 1/4" drive 7/16" socket and about a 6" extention this way when you jam it on the bolt the tape will break and lock the bolt into the socket so you dont drop it when you get it loose do the opposite when you put it back in tape around the bolt and the end of the socket i like 2 maybe 3 turns of masking tape

i use masking tape because it will tear and your socket wont get stuck down onto the bolt like if you used electrical tape or something like that
