I had my oil filter removed on my 1997 200 EFI some time ago. I have been mixing oil in gas ever since. I was told not to worry about running it rich (over mixing) as it would be safer. My motor just began to run sluggish and I replaced with the (same model) Champion spark plugs today. What an AMAZING boost of power I got from it! My only concern is that it will register 6500 RPM on my tach now...so I backed off it quickly. Later in the day, after running at 5000RPM for a few miles, an alarm went off. I assume if was overheated so cut if off immediately and fished. No problems running it back home. My question is could these new plugs give my motor enough power to overheat it? It was peeing fine all day. It sees I now have a great running motor that I'm afraid to run at WOT! Just as a by the way...I was also having electrical problems in my Champion boat today. Main power switch was intermittent and depth finders kept cutting on and off. May be pure coincidence to the outboard however. Advice please?

Ok guys...all I need to know is if I should be worried to run this motor at 6500RPM after this "newfound" power I have after replacing with the (same model) plugs. I can't believe the difference it made in my accelation and top end speed. Also, would the new power make it run hot quicker? It's been about 3-4 years since I've replaced my water pump. Someone please give me some (good) advice on this? Thanks!

As long as the plugs are the same heat range, the "correct" plug you should be fine. And no you should not be able to turn 6500. Top RPM range for your motor should be 5800.

Impeller should be changed yearly as the impeller used on these motors take a set quickly and yours is shot as you will see when you or the shop replace it...You need to step up the pitch at least by two sizes..example you are running a 17pitch you need to go to a 19 or 20 pitch prop...your hole shot will suffer but your top end may increase..at any length the rpm's will come down where they belong...you prop a boat by rpm with a light load...you cannot buy a prop off the rack like most people think..I went through 4 different props for my tunnel boat before I got it dialed in...anyways try borrowing props from friends or the local shop before you go broke trying them....You need to check the thermostats if you are fishing in salt water they are toast...You need to check the poppit valve as it is a critical piece in high speed operation...
