I have a 1987 Evinrude 70hp, ran great 2 weeks ago, put the water to it yesterday to get it ready for a fishing trip today and it fired right up and ran and idled great for the 5 or so minutes I had it running in the driveway. Then when i got it in the water at the landing it would barely start, i could get it to crank but it sounded very weak then would die. Fianally got it running and got about 500 yards from the dock and when i got out of the no wake zone i gave it some throttle and it sputtered out, I couldnt get it to crank again so the paddle got put to good use. Once i got it home, i put the muffs back on and it started right up. I have not had a chance to check compression yet but i have heard that could be the issue. Water causing too much back pressure? I do my own work on my cars but I have nevered wandering into the world of marine engines, other than simple carb cleaning and plug changing. If head gasket is shot, its it something that I could do without alot of experience, If its piston or rings Im not even going to try. Any other ideas of what it could be before I start forking out big bucks to a mechanic?
EDIT- I just checked compression, cylinder 1- 80lbs, cylinder 2-90lbs, cylinder 3- 105lbs. Quite a variety, where should these numbers be? and what would cause this?
