180 Mercruiser heat exchanger

If never planing on running my boat in salt water, I can I bypass the heat exchangers (twins)?

As long as you do not have the 470 variant engine. Meaning aluminum block w/ cast iron head. If you have this engine then no you cannot bypass. Any other engine yes.

Nope, your engine is the 3.7 (470 style) engine. 4 cylinder with a 4bbl carb.
It MUST remain a close cooled system.

Thanks for the info. Bummer for me though, both exchangers froze $3,000.00 problem including labor.

I would rig up a pressure test to check the rest of the engine before i spent money

disregard if you had antifreeze in the closed side. I have seen the 4 inch cooler used for $50.00

Seems kind of high. You can buy brand new exchangers for about $400 each. If they froze it may have only pushed the end caps loose, easy and cheap fix (about $30 for each cap). Any competent mechanic should be able to change them out in a couple of hours. As long as you can get to them and do not have to pull the engines.

Take you HE's to your local radiator repair shop. Some fix heat exchangers from boats with no problems. It's just copper and solder.
