motor will slip out of forward gear when i increase rpms. revrese gear slips but not all the way. the power head is a 62 and the lower leg is a 60. i have both parts catalog and the legs are the same as far as i can see. i have rebuilt carb, ignition, water pump. to get at the water pump the head had to be removed. could i have missed somthing reinstalling or do i have to look to the gear case? phil

I am by far no expert on these outboards yet, but if it were me, I'd pull the lower unit and check the 'clutch dog'. Sounds to me like it might be worn.

Any metal particles in the lower unit oil? It does sound like the clutch dog is jumping out of gear.

this motor i was told has been sitting for ages. when i drained the lower u the first 1/3 cup of fluid was clear water. i had never seen that before. the rest of the fluid was nasty dark brown. i did not see any metal. i will pull the leg and open the gearcase. what are the tell tale signs of a worn clutch dog?

There are ears on the clutch dog that mate to notches on the gears, look for rounding of the sharp edges on the dog and gear. Do you have a breakdown of your lower unit?
