Hey guys, I just aquired a Johnson Seahorse 9.5 hp, model MQ-11C. The thing has been sitting for 20+ years and it started on the 2nd pull! Does anyone here know much about these motors as far as maintenance I should do? My main concern is changing the lower unit oil, any info would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 1965 Johnson 9.5 hp questions

Before you run it to much, I would replace the water pump impeller. To change the lower unit oil remove the drain screw and the vent screw on the lower unit ( #17 on the below breakdown). Do NOT remove the phillips head screw! Let the oil drain and fill it from the bottom until it comes out of the vent screw. Make sure you use new gaskets on the screws, make sure you remove the old gaskets, sometimes they stick in the housing. Use a marine grade 80/90 weight oil.
It would probably be a good idea to get a factory manual for your engine, it will help you maintain your engine properly.
