Ayuh,... The Lower unit could be used on yer old Upper...
The Upper 898 is geared too high for a 4 cylinder motor...

The 898 is for a V8 engine, and has a 1.65 gear ratio, you need a 1.98 gear ratio for a 4 cylinder. Shift shoes may be installed wrong, but not your problem, they should be the same.

Re: how do i tell if i have the corect sterndrive unit?

I think my problem is in the upper unit, not sure tho..... boat was running and in the water on sat when it jus stop spinning the prop. after i got it home and made sure it wasnt linkage related i took the whole out drive off. drained the oil or should i say tried.....to find there was NONE. So this out drive was free from a friend and i actually got it to install, but it seems the shift pin(??????) turns to the left behind looking at the back of the boat and the one on the 898 turns to the right, any help would be great

just to be clear: if i seperated the upper from the lower should i be able to just spin the shift shaft to the correct position? and if so that solves my problem, but i understand the gear ratio would be different 1.50 on the 898 and don s says i need 1.98 with my 4cyl...... can i correct this with a different PROP?????? help please i have learned more in the last hr than i did the last 2 days talking with many people !!!!!!
