Trim Motor Relay Tripping

I have a problem with my trim relay that keeps tripping. It started by tripping and then I could press the trip switch and it would work again. Now after I press the trip switch and press the button to raise or lower the outdrive the relay trips immediately. I first thought it was the the motor, so I bypassed the relay and the motor works fine. then I tried hooking up a toggle switch to see if the main switch had gone bad but same result. Now I am confused as to what else it could be? I doubt its the wiring but I will try a direct power and negative next. I am wondering if its possible that even if the trim motor works that it could be the cause of tripping the relay? Could it be faulty by trying to draw more power and setting of the relay? I don't want to buy a new motor based on a hunch! Or am I just missing some other troubleshooting item associated with this type of problem. (I just replaced the relay last year and it worked fine until recently)
