Hi, I have a 1989 thundercraft 170 ls with a mercruiser 3.0 serial # 0C539905. While out on the water yesterday I heard a loud bang. I pulled the engine cover off and found that the v-belt pully had seperated from the harmonic ballancer. I found a small piece of rubber that I think must be part of what holds the pully on the ballancer. Do I need a hole new ballancer assembly or can the pully be reattached? Where is the best place to find parts? Thanks Guys!

Re: 3.0 harmonic ballancer

I had the exact same thing happen to me yesterday.I have an 89 phantom with the exact same 3.0 liter.

I just bought mine and it had been sitting 4-5 years .After a starter, alternator, and tune up i went out for the first time.
Worked great all day but after 20 min of cruising at higher speeds it let lose.
The reason i mention all this is i suspected since i used some 10w-30 when i changed my oil it got too warm and spun that off.

I see now i that i should be using 20 or 25w-50.This is just my assumption i'm a first time boat owner but maintain all my own vehicles.

From what i've searched on these forums you have to buy a new harmonic balancer,I see it also refered to as torsion damper in the manual.I just purchased one on e-bay last night for 100 bucks and there was another one from that same seller available.

I attempted to paste a link if it doesnt work i apolagize it's an easy search to find. There 250 bucks new if you haven't started searching them lol.

Re: 3.0 harmonic ballancer

Thanks for the response Tim. I have ordered th one off of ebay. Hopefully it will be here before the weekend, and not too big of a pain in the butt to install.

I got mine pulled and ready to install when i get it.Just rent the puller from the parts
store.I used a winch and the I beam to support the engine for this.

Heres an idea i have for the install since theres no threads in the nose of the crank on these.(i read a guy say it's on the 4 bangers, looks like hese right lol)There isn't a "tool"
to get or rent for it.

I been debating about doing another strap with the handle on the other side. Then
crank them at the same time.

Thanks for the pics Tim, looks like it wasn't too bad. Hope the install goes smooth. It just about made me cry when I took off the engine cover to see that.
