Hello, hope someone can help me decide if I should send this to the big fishing hole in the sky :(

I have a 78 Johnson Model 6804B
In a bucket of water it starts OK, runs OK for 10-20 seconds.
When revving it up, and water gets drawn up, it starts to Bog down, pretty sure it's running on one cylinder
Plugs indicate water in the Lower Cylinder
Replaced the Head Gasket

I have a REALLY stupid question(s).

1) Is there another path that water is entering the cylinder that I could check the gasket for? Or is there a crack that I should be looking for.

2) What should the compression be, I will test it tonight (Neighbor borrowed my gauge)

3) If a crank bearing is gone/going would this throw off the valves, any way water could be getting in from down there ?

Thanks in advance
Peter

1) Water getting into a cylinder is usually a defective head gasket, although the could be a crack in the block. When you replaced the head gasket did you check the head to make sure it was flat, torque the head bolts to proper specs.
2) They don't print compression values, to many variables. If you have anywhere around 80 - 90 pounds it should start.
3) That is a 2-cycle engine, the only valves are reed valves be hind the carb. No water there.

I have 85 psi on both cylinders and i have a 79 6hp.....i've got sparks but hey my motor won't start...lucky you hah!

Changed Fuel pump unit, rebuilt carb with new gaskets and i used a compressor to blow air in every possible hole
Made sure the float is parallel to the carb
Changed Head gasket...

The motor just bogged down/stopped running after about 1 min on the lake (it did not overheat during that 1 min) because it was pissing like crazy =p

And this is when everything started........it used to run fine in a water tank before i went and tested it on the lake

Wasa-You could have leaking exhaust cover gaskets or a hole in the inner exhaust cover.
