Ok got the 1969 evenrude 40 horse running, the problem i am having is the water coming out the pee hole ie: Exhaust .
I took the bottom end off and pulled the impeller off took it to my local marine guy and he said it was fine and looked new.
So, i dont know where else to look or what to do.
The boat motor turns over first crack and i was told sometimes it takes about 45 to 60 seconds for all the chambers to fill up.
Well i turned the boat motor off when the hot light came on about 90 seconds later.
Any help would be great, gord maple ridge bc. Canada.

The water level must be a couple inches above the water pump area. Is it?

If it is, remove the cylinder head, inspect and clean the head gasket sealing surfaces, blow out the water passages including the water tubes, install a new head gasket and clean out the thermostat area. If this doesn't do it, install a new water pump.

ok i dont know how far the leg should be under water with this engine my geuss is that the pickup is the piece with the small screen just above the prop ??? if not i dont know how far the engine should be underwater.
as far as the water pump, i had no idea it had one .
i thought the rubber impeller was the pump?? is the water suppose to come out the same hole as the exhaust.
what good does taking the head off do. ???

ive got a better suggestion joe ... make sure that the water pump tube is in the hole up top inside the leg AND in the grommet on the waterpump housing ive chased that tail before and it wasnt that it wasnt pumping it just wasnt hooked up right -do this BEFORE you pull the head

Exactly how deep do you have the leg in the water? I suggest puting it deeper and trying again before you start tearing things apart.

Obviously you know where the water pump is if you had the impeller out of it. That water pump must be submerged. Have the water level about 3 inches above where the lower unit bolts up to the long exhaust housing.

Removing the cylinder head is only necessary if all else fails and you need to check sealing surfaces, clean out water passages, etc.

Re: S o s, i need help !!!

In the morning i will try and put a taller garbage can under the motor to submerg the water pump, impeller and see if that works .
or i will have to take the leg apart again, pain in the ***, and make sure all goes together correctly again.
ps ,is there 1 or 2 water tubes how could i unplug these lines.
also where exactley is the port that draws the water up into the pummp or engine.
1969 evenrude 40 ,electric start.

If you drop the lower unit again, you'll see the water tube. Looks like plumbing. Are you sure you replaced the key in the water pump when you took out the impellar? Try posting pics of your motor, focusing on the leg/lower unit and someone can draw for you where the water line needs to be.

You have to have the leg WAY deep in the trash can in order for the pump to work.
