Early 80s Mercury 80hp Fuel Problems

I just purchased an early 80s 80hp motor and my primer ball wont stay hard i can put around all day at slow speeds but when i open her up and plane out she goes soft and i have to keep pumping it and she will run fine. Any ideas? new primer ball and fuel line from tank to motor. Fuel pump? Gas tank? Any help would be great thanks so much
